Inside: In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb freebies for your classroom.
This is an updated post!
I have a free package of “In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb” classroom activities that are perfect for K-2 students.
1. Lion and Lamb Craft
In this mini package you’ll find a cool Lion/Lamb craft.
It’s an accordian-style “book” with illustrations of spring and winter.
But of course, you could have your kiddos illustrate anything they like, as long as it pertains to March theme of “in like a lion, out like a lamb”.
For example, they could illustrate their favourite springtime book or perhaps a class March poem.
There’s a tiny bit of prep involved, but the results are so cute it’s worth the extra time.
Here’s how ours turned out:
2. March Drama Activity
I’ve also included a copy of a story that would be fun to dramatize with the kids (the story was a Scholastic freebie from many years ago).
It’s a 3-page story called the The Winter Woodland and it’s about the North Wind and the change from winter to spring.
The idea is to read the story slowly while your class gets up and silently dramatizes the various parts of the story.
I always stress that they need to be like mimes, otherwise things can get very noisy. But with clear explanations and guidance, I find that the majority of the kids can do this properly.
It helps to model how to act out a part of the story before beginning. Everyone quickly gets the hang of things and most kids come up with some very creative moves while acting out the story.
This is such a fun activity with absolutely no prep at all! The students get to act out all the parts in any way they please, as long as they’re quiet and not bumping into others.
We did it today and it was SO much fun. The kids really loved it!
I hope you give it a try.
3. Predicting March Weather
Every year, a day or two before the start of March, I have my students predict whether they think March will come in like a lion or lamb.
We discuss what that means in terms of the weather in our region.
Lion weather, here on the west coast of Canada, is cold, rainy, windy and stormy in late winter.
Lamb weather is warmer, with only a light breeze and maybe some sun peeking through the clouds.
Everyone makes their predictions and then receives either a lion or lamb writing sheet.
In addition to writing their prediction, I have them write a brief description of that kind of weather.
To finish it all off, they draw a picture of themselves outside on a “lion” day or a “lamb” day.
Here’s what the lamb page looks like. The lion page is the same except for … you guessed it … a lion image.
I’ve bundled up all these activities into a cute little 10-page package. It’s been completely revamped and is more attractive and much easier to follow (I don’t know what I was thinking 10 years ago when I first made this!!!)

Before you go I have one more thing. I just found this in my google drive files. We’re going to do this on Friday. It’s an oldie but goodie from an old Mailbox issue.
Thanks for reading everyone! If you enjoyed this post, please subscribe for updates and freebies. The link is in the sidebar.
How wonderfully adorable! What a fun way to bring idioms … or is it a cliche? … to life. Thanks for sharing.Barbara

Local weather looks like March will be coming in like a lion. Just so long as it turns lamb-like by Spring Break!
I can't wait for that lamb! Thanks for sharing such nice ideas! Maria
So cute! We aren't in March yet, but lately it has been like a lion around here! LoriConversations in Literacy
It's supposed to be raining all week. I'd say March will definitely be coming in like a lion. Of course, cute stuff here Barb!❀ TammyForever in First
March definitely came in like a lion here! Thanks for the freebie. It's a perfect start to my weather unit. I can't wait to put them up on a bulletin board. It will look so cute!-ChrissyFirstgradefoundme.blogspot.com
where can I get the lion and lamb craft that is at the top of your page? Can't find a link to get it! Thanks in advance it is SO cute!bkelly@egsd.net
Hi Brooke,Glad you like it:). If you click on the second image from the top you can download it from google drive. I just checked the link and it works fine. I did all these activities again this year and they were so much fun!Barb
Hi Barb,I have the same question as Brooke Kelly, when I click on it I get a printable but it isn't the same clip art/images as the project that is shown. Do you have the templates from the project that is shown in the first picture? Thanks for the cute ideas!
Hi Megan,Okay, I've fixed everything to make it easier. If you click on the first or second picture you'll get the package in google drive. There's a template for the lion and lamb, plus some directions. There are also two writing sheets and a little drama activity.Enjoy!
Hi Barb, I did see all of that, it just isn't the same clip art as what is showing…I was hoping for those exact pictures that you used that the project shows in the picture! Thanks for your help!
Oh, you're right, Megan! I didn't even notice that. Sorry, I'm not sure where I got the lion and lamb that's showing in the pic. Good luck with your project!
You know what? I did some searching and realize I got it from Scholastic a few years ago when it was free. They have a clipart store but you have to pay a monthly fee now.
I’m excited to get the lion & lamb patterns as well as the predictable graph. we are going to use them next Wednesday & Thursday.
Hi Sheryl! I hope your kids enjoy them 🙂
