A Morning with Blueburry: 6 Free Activities

I’m very excited to feature this sweet and funny book, A Morning with Blueburry.

A Morning with Blueburry book review

A Morning with Blueburry, by Jon Seymour, is one of the most delightful children’s books I’ve read in a while. I actually had a big grin on my face when I finished reading it.

This charming little story is all about Blueburry the Muffin. He wakes up one morning with a hankering for something delicious. As he makes his way across the kitchen he spies the absolutely perfect snack. But how to reach it? After all, it’s “one thousand muffin metres” away!

The fun begins when Blueburry uses his imagination, problem-solving skills, and fierce determination to make his way to the coveted goodie. And of course his friends, juice box, fruit, and bread are there to cheer him along.

I adore the simple pencil line drawings. So many children’s books these days are illustrated with digital cartoon art (which tends to have a sameness about them) so I find it refreshing to read a book filled with expressive, hand-drawn pictures.

At the end of the book the author has included a blueburry muffin recipe, directions for drawing Blueburry, and the suggestion to write your own Blueburry adventure story.

I highly recommend this book! I think it’s perfect for 3-year-olds up to 7 or 8.

A Morning with Blueburry Story Extensions:

I have lots of wonderful ideas for you to extend this book. And they’re all free (links to download at the end of the post).

Muffin Puppet: I’ve been making puppets for my TPT store and while I was reading about Blueburry it occurred to me that it would be so much fun to play with a muffin puppet while reading the story.

Muffin Measurement: I laughed out loud when I read the phrase “one thousand muffin metres”. So I’ve created a little muffin man for measuring. What a perfect way to augment your math unit on non-standard measurement. I’ve included both a colour and black/white version. Just have your kiddos cut out the muffin to use as their non-standard measuring tool!

Onomatopoeia Word Search: That’s right 🙂 This story is full of lots of fun sound words. So I gathered them up and put them into a little word search. The pdf includes an answer key, too!

Prediction: It’s always fun to guess what a character’s next move might be. Right after Blueburry makes several failed attempts at reaching his snack, stop and ask your young listeners, “What do you think Blueberry is going to do next?” I’d follow that up with a “Turn and Talk” and then have the pairs share out their ideas.

Characteristics: Blueburry has lots of desirable personality traits — humorous, determined, imaginative, and more. You could draw a picture of Blueburry on the board and write all of his traits around him. Then ask, “Can you think of a time when you persevered (or used your imagination, or behaved in a determined fashion)?”

Writing: The beginning of the book starts out with some repetition: “Early one morning Blueburry the Muffin went for a walk along the … He walked past a … He walked past a … And he walked past a …” Point this out to your children, do a little brainstorming, talk about descriptive words, and then have them write their own version. For example, they might come up with: “Chocolate the Cupcake went for a walk along the sidewalk. He walked past a hungry dog. He walked past a fluttering butterfly. And he walked past a racing firetruck!” Of course, they could finish off their writing with a colourful illustration of their own.

I hope you enjoyed these book extension ideas and be sure to grab a copy of A Morning with Blueburry from either Amazon (affiliate link) or the publisher, Tielmour Press Inc.
