Easy and Beautiful Valentine Art for Grade 1

I joined up with Emily from Emmy Mac’s Class PLUS 187 other Canadian teachers for the Great Canadian Valentine Swap!

Each teacher sends a Valentine to 20 other classes across Canada, and in return we all receive 20 different Valentines for our own class. We’ve already received six cards. On Monday I’m going to set up our map of Canada and open the cards with the kids. This is going to be educational AND great fun!

We made our Valentine’s yesterday and I have to say I’m pretty happy with them.

DIRECTIONS FOR HAND PRINT VALENTINES

I gave the kids an 11×14 piece of paper with two hearts (one large and one small), some watercolours, water and brushes.

I said they could paint them however they wanted, but to remember to use lots of paint for bright colours and no black or brown.

Once the paint was dry they cut out both hearts. I painted their hands with black tempera for the hand print and then they glued the little heart onto the palm.

If I do this again (which I surely will) I’ll use liquid watercolours, rather than the Crayola pan paints. I’m pretty sure the colours will be more vivid if I do. But you know what, considering the rather inferior tools we were using I still think the hearts look beautiful!

Since we’re giving away these hearts, we decided to make another set that we could keep at school.

 

DIRECTIONS FOR DOILY VALENTINES

We used the same paper with the big and little hearts, only this time I had them sponge paint the hearts using red, white and purple tempera paint. And then, as you can see, instead of a hand print, we added a doily.

The kids were very happy with these ones, too, and they’re now gracing our hallway bulletin board.

In the next week or so we’ll be making these super cute Valentine bags.
