Inside: Book review of Snowmen All Year.
I just discovered the sweetest book that I’d like to share with you.
Title: Snowmen All Year
Written by: Caralyn Buehner
Illustrations by: Mark Buehner
Publishing: Dial Books for Young Readers, 2010, Fiction
Suitable for Ages: 3 to 9
Themes/Topics: Winter, Imagination, Friendship, Seasons
Opening: “I love to build a snowman on freezing winter days. But when the sun is bright and warm my snowman melts away. There’s nothing but a puddle when my snowman disappears. If only he were magic and could stay with me all year!”
Brief Synopsis: A little boy wishes his snowman was magic and could stay with him all year. He imagines all the fun adventures they would have throughout the spring, summer and autumn.
Why I Like This Book: There are lots of reasons to LOVE this book. It’s colourful and visually appealing, with a lovely rhythmic flow. The activities the little boy imagines his snowman friend doing, are so fun and silly that it challenges the reader to think of other things you could do with a snowman. And if you’re using this book at school, it ties in nicely with a winter theme or a changing seasons unit.

2. Have the kids each pick a season then put the children together in seasonal groupings. Each group then brainstorms and writes/draws some season-specific activities they would like to do with a magic snowman.
For example, water-ski with your snowman in the summer, go trick-or-treating in the fall, plant a garden in the spring.
Next, have everyone paint a snowman in their chosen season. The painting must include a seasonally correct deciduous tree, at least one seasonal prop (eg., spring/umbrella; summer/tent; fall/pumpkin; winter/skis) and of course, the snowman playing with a child, as described in the example above.
I’m going to be reading this book to my class next week. I can hardly wait!
