PPB Friday and SHOUT OUT!

Happy ALMOST Friday!  Most (if not ALL) of my featured books for Perfect Picture Book Friday have been about snow. And here I am with yet another one. Please forgive the repetitiveness, but after all, I DO teach Grade 1, and this IS the middle of winter, and you know how primary teachers like to keep everything in context and all theme-related :)

I've just started a Penguin and Polar Bear unit, so guess what you're going to see for the next couple of weeks?

Let's get started ...

The Polar Bear and the Snow Cloud

Written & Illustrated by: Jane Cabrera

MacMillan Children's Books, 2002

Suitable for Ages: 3-6

Themes/Topics: Winter, Polar Bears, Friendship

Opening: "There once was a polar bear whose only friend was a fluffy white snow cloud. He loved the cloud, but he wished for a friend he could play with."

Synopsis: This is a sweet story about a lonely polar bear cub.  A snow cloud takes pity on him and tries to help by making him a variety of snow friends. But this only makes the cub sadder and sadder as he quickly realizes his snow friends can't actually play with him. But this is a children's book, so I'm sure you can predict the happy outcome!

Why I LIke It:  It's a great way to introduce very young readers to Canada's northern climate and the animals that live there, all while exploring the themes of friendship and need.

Links to Resources
1. Because of its simplicity, this is a great book for practicing retelling skills.
2. It's equally good for introducing Arctic animals.
3. For some beautiful polar bear art projects, visit That Artist Woman

4. And here's an adorable cotton ball polar bear (sorry, no directions, but it's pretty easy to make just from the picture).

Isn't he the cutest? I was going to do this project tomorrow, but just realized I don't have enough toilet paper rolls :(   Oh well, I'll just have to wait until next week.

That's it! Have a fabulous Friday and I'll see you soon.

  10. Barbara, what a fun book for kids. Love polar bears. It focuses on the animals in the artic, but also the isolation. Loved you polar bear project. Your kids will have fun creating their own polar bears. Checked out your friend's blog and she is very creative.

  15. The polar bear craft is too cute! And your comment about toilet paper rolls reminded me that I'll be collecting things like this when my son enters school. Bring on the penguins, as I'm looking for resources for a penguin themed birthday party. :) I followed the 3 AM Teacher's blog and on Pinterest. I envision "pinning" lots of her stuff.
