Last week I wrote about the funniest book ever! That was an Elephant and Piggie book by Mo Willems.
We’ve read a whole bunch of them now, including all the Pigeon books.
Last week the kids wrote their own 5-page stories in the style of Mo Willems. I told them they could use Piggie and Gerald as their characters or they could make up their own.
The kids finished their books on Friday and I have to say, they’re pretty darn cute! They had a chance to share them with each other and they laughed their heads off.
As you know, 6-year-old humour is a LOT different from ours:) To be honest, I didn’t think some of the stories were very funny BUT I was thrilled that the kids understood and were able to copy the Mo Willems style of writing. And they thought their material was hilarious, so really, that’s all that counts.
This little girl did an especially wonderful job!
Don’t you love how she showed Gerald yelling, the way he always does?
One of our Social Studies lessons on Needs and Wants was based on the Pigeon’s needs and wants. As a follow-up activity they did a directed drawing of the pigeon. They were painted in watercolours and outlined with a black Sharpie.
I LOVE these! I’m so proud of my kids.
You have me HOOKED! I ran to the bookstore and picked up a couple of Piggie and Elephant books after your last post. And, after giggling like a 6 year old in the children's section of the store while reading them – I struggled to find a way to only purchase two. I CANNOT wait to read them to my kiddos!
Those are so cute. I love the directed drawing of the Pigeons, adorable.TerriKinder Princess
WOW! Their pigeons are amazing. I love the little girl's story you shared – she certainly has picked up on speech bubbles and large print. Maria
The directed drawing turned out FABULOUS… I am very partial to directed art projects and these are wonderful. Also- thanks for turning me on to Mo Willems books – I think they are a hoot!CindyGranny Goes to School
My Princesses LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Mo Willems books. They read them to me all the time. Over Skype! You have some talented kids!!
Oh my! These have just turned out so cute! It is great when the students get the author's style and then try it out in their own writing. The pigeons also turned adorable! Your kids' artwork always turns out great!LoriConversations in Literacy
I love your pigeons too and the book is adorable. What fun with Mo!❀ TammyForever in First
So amazing! What a great way to connect reading and writing:) TaraThe Math Maniac
You'll have to let me know what your kids thought! 🙂
Thanks, everyone! You will never regret buying Mo Willems' books, that's for sure!
Those are totally awesome. Your kids really get Pigeon and Elephant and Piggie.
I love the idea of having kids write their own Gerald and Piggie books. My kiddos are really into knock knock jokes. They come up with some that they laugh hysterically over and I just laugh because it's so not funny!Jenny
We are going to try writing our own Piggie and Gerald books tomorrow. Thanks for the great idea!Petersons-Pad
