Scarecrows ~ Poem and Art!

Inside: A free scarecrow poem and art activity.

Our poem this week is about a silly old scarecrow. I’m sharing the version you see below and another one with some of the words missing.

We also painted some fabulous scarecrows today! This lesson is from Deep Space Sparkle.

We did this lesson in two parts.

In the morning we completed a directed drawing of the scarecrows using black pastels. No pencils allowed! I was worried some of my little perfectionists were going to be stressed out with this, but it was seriously great. There were no tears and EVERYONE ended up with a great looking scarecrow.

Here’s what a couple of them looked like before we painted them.

Aren’t they sweet?

Part 2 was in the afternoon when I gave the kids some blue, red and yellow tempera paints. They went to town. For some of them, the best part was mixing the colours to make new ones:)

If you’re looking for a scarecrow book to go along with this, Sandi from rubberboots and elf shoes highly recommends The Scarecrow’s Hat by Ken Brown.

I have another scarecrow art activity here. It’s actually a Thanksgiving post but if you scroll to the bottom you’ll find the cute scarecrows.

  1. The scarecrows turned out so darling!!! What a wonderful little group of artists you have. Thanks for sharing the pictures and Deep Space Sparkle. I really enjoy adding new resources to my list. P.S. Art is so good for the brain, the heart, and the spirit. I so admire that you take the time to teach it. In this age of common core standards (U.S.) so many really healthy endeavors are being left by the way-side.CindyGranny Goes to School
