Thanksgiving in Grade 1

Inside: Thanksgiving books, how to draw a turkey, turkey writing, free printable, scarecrow art project.

It’s Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada so I’m sharing some of the activities we did last week.

A Plump and Perky Turkey + Post Reading Activities

First off, we read this very funny book, A Plump and Perky Turkey, about a clever turkey who outwits the folks who want to eat him for Thanksgiving dinner.

After the story we did a directed drawing. If you’re unsure how to draw a turkey with your kiddos, then check out these directions from Emily Drawing.

Once our drawings were complete I had the kids write: The turkey said, “Don’t eat me. Eat ____!”

More Turkey Writing

In my pocket chart I have a bunch of cards that say “A turkey can ___”. The kids brainstormed all the things a turkey can do and then we repeated the process with things a turkey can’t do.

Bear Says Thanks is very sweet. It was a good one to jump start a discussion about gratitude.

And 10 Fat Turkeys is just hilarious fun! Plus, it rhymes, so that’s a bonus at this time of year when I’m trying to teach the kids how to recognize and generate their own rhymes.

Our Thankful Tree

We also made a thankful tree. Not a great picture but I think you get the idea – the kids traced their hands, cut them out, and wrote something they’re thankful for.

Scarecrow Art

Last week in Art, my TOC did a FABULOUS job helping the kids create these scarecrows (inspiration from Deep Space Sparkle).

She pre-cut the denim overalls and drew the face, shirt and hat templates for the kids to cut out. They, of course, did the painting on their own and all the gluing and details.
