Gummy Bears Experiment PLUS Bear Poems

Happy September!

We’ve just started a new school year.  I was going to begin with a forest unit, but I’ve decided to go with bears instead.

My first experiment for this unit is all about gummy bears. I know! It won’t teach the kids anything about bears themselves, but it’s fun. It involves food. And it’s all about the science process, right?

The experiment is super simple: Give everyone a gummy bear, a cup and some water. Soak the bears overnight and watch what happens!

Of course, it’s important to measure the bears first and make hypotheses (will the bears shrink? grow? stay the same?)

I have three sheets to get you started.

The first one (below) describes the experiment.

The second sheet (below) is for the students to complete.

I left the measurement area open to accommodate inches, cm, or non-standard units of measurement.

The third sheet (not shown) has some bears on it that you can photocopy for your students. These are to be used for the class hypotheses graph.

  1. I use science kits from my district towards the end of the year, but if I can find time, I'd love to do some of these kinds of shorter experiments throughout the year. Thanks for giving me lots of great ideas.❀ TammyForever in First
