Inside: Be inspired by this beautiful poppy art. Directions included.
Today I noticed the most beautiful art in our hallway. It was created by a class of grade 4 students. These watercolour paintings are SO gorgeous I just had to share them with you!
I believe the teacher that day was a “Teacher on Call” … a very talented teacher with an art degree. I wish I knew who you were so I could give you proper credit because these paintings are amazing!
Thank you for brightening our hallways.
MY BEST GUESS DIRECTIONS:
SUPPLIES:
- watercolour paper
- pencil
- black pastel crayon (chalk or oil)
- watercolour brushes, a large one for the background and a smaller one for the poppies
- water
- liquid watercolours (vibrant pan paints could also be used)
I didn’t teach this art lesson but after a few years of painting watercolours myself, this is how I THINK it was done:
- Poppies and stems were draw first. It’s important to give the poppy stems some width so that you can paint them letter. Initial drawing is done in pencil.
- Two wavy background lines are drawn in with pencil.
- Judging by some of the beautiful water and paint blooms I see in the paintings, I think it’s wet-on- wet. This means wet paint onto wet paper. So you have your students use their smaller brushes to paint the flower blossoms with water only. Then drop in some red liquid watercolour and watch it spread throughout the blossom area.
- When the blossoms are dry, paint the stems with water and drop in some green liquid watercolour.
- When that’s dry, paint the top background with water (stay away from the flowers) and drop in a colour of your choice.
- Repeat step 5 with the bottom background area.
- When both the top and bottom background sections are dry, paint the middle background as described above.
- When the final background is dry, use a black pastel to trace the poppies, add the middle of the poppies, and trace over the 2 background wavy lines.
I hope that helps. Happy painting!

I can see why you've shared them. They are indeed quite lovely.❀ TammyForever in First

Thanks, Tammy. I told some of the students how much I loved them and they beamed with pride:)
Thanks, April!
Wow! How gorgeous!ChrissyFirst Grade Found Me
Are these with pastels and watercolours?
Yes, they are Catherine. Thanks for stopping by!
Did you have them draw the black pastel first and then paint in watercolour?
The kids drew the background lines and flowers in pencil first. Then they painted. Once the paint was dry they added the black pastel. I’ll add the directions to the post. I should have done that years ago:)
Thanks for visiting!
