Inside: You’ll find three fabulously cute Easter poems I’ve been using with my class for years and years! This is an updated post.
I have three very sweet Easter poems to share with you. I’ve been using all of them in my first grade class for many many years.
HOW I TEACH POETRY
Every single week I teach my class a new poem. I’ll either print the poem on a large piece of chart paper or I’ll display a coloured copy on my Smart Board.
We do repeated readings over the week with the whole class, in groups, in pairs and sometimes individually. We like to use different voices and we always create actions for the poems. Sometimes we get very silly and read the poems backwards!
Every Friday I give the kids a black and white copy of the poem. We do some word work with it first. By that I mean, I’ll ask them to underline or circle specific words, rhyming words, or words with particular vowel sounds, digraphs, or blends. It’s quick and easy but gives everyone extra practice with reading and spelling.
After the word work, the poems are illustrated and coloured. Sometimes I include the illustration, but often I’ll have them draw their own picture to go with it.
These illustrated poems are then added to the students’ poetry duotangs where we keep our collection from the whole entire year!
If we have time we always like to finish up with Poetry Theatre. The kids break off into groups of two to five (I usually let them choose their own groups). Then each group picks a poem to practice reading together (they check with me first so that each group is reading a different poem).
I give them about 10 minutes to practice reading and acting out the poem with their group. Then we all sit down and each group gets in front of the class and reads / acts out their chosen poem.
It’s great fun! But it also gives everyone practice performing in front of a group and practice learning to be a good audience member. We practice quiet hands, no talking, eyes on the performers, and polite clapping at the end.
Try it! I guarantee your class will love Poetry Theatre.
