Kids' Books: Santa's Stuck

Kids' Books: Santa's Stuck

Santa's Stuck is one of my favourite Christmas books. But better yet, my students always loved this book, too.

It's been around awhile (2004) but it's definitely worth reading. In fact, I think it will become one of those timeless Christmas classics.

Opening:

Toys are nestled, tree lights glow. Stockings, stuffed, march in a row. Santa sighs. It's time to go ... Gathers up his giant sack, spies a note and Christmas snack!

What's It About?

Well, as I'm sure you've gathered by the title and opening lines, Santa enjoys his snacks just a little too much and before he knows it, he's stuck in the chimney.

It's Christmas Eve and Santa needs help. Between the reindeer, cat, dog and mouse, Santa finally POPS out of the chimney!

Why I Like Santa's Stuck

I really love the big, bold and bright illustrations. They're very expressive and appealing.

And the rhyming story is fun, too!  When you think about all the snacks children the world over leave for Santa on Christmas Eve -- well, it's no wonder the chimney starts to feel a little tight.

I love how all the animals pull (and push) together to help Santa out of his predicament. And I think kids will enjoy the the surprise ending.

My Favorite Book-Related Activity

Did you know that first graders have excellent problem-solving powers?

My class figured out LOTS of great ways to save Santa should he ever find himself stuck in the chimney!

They would use ropes, ladders, toilet plungers, soap and oil. One creative person decided that he would feed Santa many cookies to make him even fatter in the hopes that the chimney would crack open and free Santa!

Gotta love six-year-olds!

This super idea came from Nancy at First Grade WOW. You should head on over cause she's got a ton of free Christmas stuff. When you land on her page it looks like the wrong link because she starts off with Thanksgiving pictures. But just scroll down a little and you'll see some Santa's Stuck images. Right below that there's a link for a FREE 59-page booklet. Thank you, Nancy!!
