Inside: Free printables for Groundhog Day.
Kids love puppets. It doesn’t matter how simple they are. And that’s why my classes always love this Groundhog Day activity.
This is a new and improved update of a five-year-old post, but these are still my favourite go-to Groundhog Day activities so I wanted to be sure to share them again.
DIRECTIONS FOR POP-UP PUPPET:
1. Cut 5″ strips from 14″ by 9″ brown construction paper (one for each child).
2. Cut 1.5″ green paper strips the same length as the brown. This will be for the grass.
3. Glue a thin strip of cotton fluff along the top edge of the brown paper (as shown above). This is the snow.
5. Fringe the green strip and glue under the snow. This is the grass.
6. Give everyone a copy of the poem (download below) and have them cut the poem in a cloud shape. Glue under the grass.

Pops up through the fluffy snow
Wide awake he wants to play
Spring is on its way
HURRAY!!!!!
7. Draw bones, rocks, spiders, ladybugs, etc. onto the soil with felt pens. Then glue the ground into a cylindrical shape.
8. Cut, color, and glue the groundhog to a craft stick.
9. Chant the poem while popping the groundhog up and down through the burrow.
My students love this little puppet and want to play with it all day long!
GROUNDHOG REBUS STORY:
We read the The Weatherman story together a few times (it’s great for predicting words that make sense), and then I get the kids to cut and glue the missing pictures (we don’t cut out the words).
They colour it, then we practice reading the story some more.
DOWNLOAD all the above activities!
Update: All the pics are now in black and white.
And here’s a really cute activity I found at Artists Helping Children:
