This is a new and improved update of a five-year-old post, but these are still my favourite go-to Groundhog Day activities so I wanted to be sure to share them again.
First we make the "ground". We use stretched-out cotton balls for the snow and a fringed piece of green construction paper for the grass underneath.
Then bones, rocks, spiders, ladybugs, etc. are drawn onto the soil with felt pens. And of course we add the poem:
Lastly, the ground is glued into a cylindrical shape and we chant the poem while popping the groundhog up and down through the burrow. This is their favourite part!
The other activity we do without fail is this little rebus story. We read the story together a few times (it's great for predicting words that make sense), and then I get the kids to cut and glue the missing pictures (we don't cut out the words). They colour it, then we practice reading the story some more.
