Publishing: G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers, 2010
Ages: 3-8
Themes: Easter, Rabbits, Generosity
Summary
The Easter Egg is a sweet story about generosity, bravery and selflessness. Little Hoppi wants to decorate the most beautiful egg so that he can win the honour of helping the Easter Rabbit deliver eggs. But he’s overwhelmed by the many choices and the enormity of the task.
After Hoppi comes to Mother Robin’s rescue, a lovely surprise is in store for him.
Looking for some activities to go with the book? I have a few right here!
Story Elements
My class is learning about story elements, so this is the template we used today. The template is a little different looking from what you might be used to. This is because there are two problems Hoppi faces, each with the identical solution.
Descriptive Writing
We also painted our own beautiful eggs. This idea was originally from the blog, Art Projects for Kids. The kids drew their designs in crayon and then we painted a wash of colour over top.
The kids then chose their favourite 3 eggs, cut them out, glued them into their journals, and wrote a description. This was a popular writing activity!
Easter Bunny Art
We also painted these gorgeous bunnies. It was a directed lesson. We used blue construction paper, tempera paint and black crayons for outlining. I found this idea at the Art Teacher’s Closet blog.
Easter Bunny Baskets
Since we’re having an Easter egg hunt tomorrow we got busy and made our bunny baskets.
It’s a bit hard to see in the image below, but all we did was cut the ears from the top of a white paper lunch bag and then the kids used their felt pens to colour in a bunny face.
It’s very easy and looks great when finished! I always put some coloured Easter straw in the baskets and they use them to cushion their dyed eggs, as well as to hold their chocolate eggs from the hunt.
Easter Poem
And finally, here’s the poem we’ve been learning all week.
