I’ve been making cactus clipart the last couple of weeks so I thought I’d look for some books about cacti and share those with you.
Clementina’s Cactus by Ezra Jack Keats is a charming wordless picture book. It’s a very sweet story about a man and his daughter, Clementina, who happen upon a lone cactus. The next morning they discover a beautiful cactus surprise!
I really enjoyed the gorgeous watercolour paintings.
And of course, wordless picture books are perfect for the classroom where you can create your own text in a shared writing format.
Hug Me, by Simona Ciraolo is also a real winner. It’s a story about a lonely cactus called Felipe. All he wants in life is to be hugged. Naturally he has a hard time fulfilling this dream until he meets an unlikely new friend.
This is a lovely book about friendship and is sure to be a hit with the younger set:)
This last book, Cactus Hotel by Brenda Z. Guiberson, is non-fiction. If you’re studying cacti in the classroom, I highly recommend this book.
The story begins with black seeds bursting from the bright red fruit of a saguaro cactus. It then follows the life of one of the seedlings until the 200-year-old cactus finally falls over in a big wind.
What’s really fascinating are all the animals that live in and around this beautiful giant. They provide food, sustenance and shelter to a myriad of creatures.
