I just received a complimentary copy of a brand-new alphabet book!

I read it to my almost six-year-old grandson and he enjoyed it very much. His main comment was he thought it was very funny that the letters were all taking off, plus he was intrigued with the different ways they all looked.

I hope you like it as much as Olin did!

Synopsis:You know the old excuse, “The dog ate my homework”? Well, B.C.R. Fegan ditched that tired old cliche and came up with a charming new reason for some unfinished homework. Jet was supposed to write out his ABC’s, but when his teacher discovered that he didn’t do it, Jet carefully explained why and how each of the errant letters simply ran away!

Opening Lines:

“Oh no!” said the teacher. “Master Jet, you haven’t written the alphabet.”
“I did, Mrs. May,” said Jet in dismay, “but…today was the day that A ran away.”

Why I Like This Book:

1. The illustrations are sweet and colourful.
2. Each letter has been turned into a unique and cute little creature.
3. Each page has a number of items that begin with the runaway letter. For example, the letter A is an astronaut alien carrying an axe. C is a clown climbing a tree with a cat and a caterpillar.
4. The story rhymes.
5. There’s a logical consequence for Jet’s unfinished homework.

Book Related Activities:

ART: As a class, brainstorm a list of creatures for each letter of the alphabet. It doesn’t have to be a lengthy list, just as long as there are a couple of choices per letter. Each child could then choose their favourite letter and change it into a creature (similar to what Lenny Wen did).

CRAFTS: Or, you could visit Crystal and Co. for some ABC crafts.

LOOK CLOSELY: Be sure to take time to carefully look at each page and find all the objects that begin with the letter. Make a list of them. Add more words to your list.

ALLITERATION: It would be fun to give pairs of children copies of the different pages and have them write an alliteration sentence to go with their picture. E.g., King K had a kitten and a kite.

POETRY: Or the whole class could write an alphabet poem where the first line begins with A, the second line with B, etc. For example: All the letters / Big and small / Cried out, “We need to leave!” / D led the charge with / Elephant E / Following closely behind ….

RESPONSIBILITY: Be sure to have a discussion about being responsible and doing your homework. Kind of boring, but VERY important that kids understand the consequences.

WRITING: Invent your own wild and wacky reason for not completing your homework.
