Why I Like This Book: Oh my, where to begin? I think the main reason I love this book is because of the beautiful and timeless lyrics. As a picture book, it’s very quiet, peaceful and thought-provoking. The illustrations are sweet, colourful, and child-friendly: it’s easy to look at. But more importantly, this is the perfect book for a deep, meaningful conversation.

Other Thoughts: Before reading this book to young children (and yes, I’d definitely read it to K or Grade 1), I’d let them know it has the word “hell” in it. Anyone who’s been around little kids knows that when they hear that word, they’ll either laugh or be shocked that you’re saying a bad word.

Follow-Up Activities:

  1. Grand Conversation: Talk about the lyrics. What pictures did you have in your head while listening to the story? How did it make you feel? What do you think John Lennon’s big idea is? What was he thinking about? Are you curious about any of the words? Are there parts you didn’t understand? Do you have any of your own questions?
  2. Listen to “Imagine”, the song.
  3. Paint or draw (after the story), but while listening to the song.
  4. Write about your perfect world. What does that look like for you?
  5. World Peace Day: This is a great book to read on World Peace Day, September 21.
