Ocean Science Experiments!

Inside: A round-up of some wonderful ocean science experiments for kids.

I love the ocean (I live on an island) and love doing experiments with my class, although I’m more than a little embarrassed to admit that I didn’t do ANY last year!! It was a challenging year; what can I say?

Since I also view this blog as my personal filing cabinet of ideas, I thought I’d do a round-up of my favourite ocean experiments.

Some of them I’ve tried and some I haven’t. But I spent about three hours scouring the web for what I considered to potentially be the best.

I know that I’m inspired to try them out … and I hope you are, too!

Many thanks to all the bloggers (their links are below) for sharing your wonderful ideas!

Salt Water Density Experiment from The Science Kiddo.

Ocean Zones in a Jar from I Can Teach My Child.

Crystal Seashells by Little Bins for Little Hands.

The next three oil spill experiments are all quite similar but I couldn’t decide which one I liked the best.

Oil Spill Clean up Experiment for Kids by Kitchen Counter Chronicles

Ocean Oil Spill Activity by One Time Through

Cleaning Up Oil Spills from The Coalition for Science After School (This one is best for older kids).

Tidepool Science Experiment from Buggy and Buddy

Ocean Current Experiment from Life Over C’s

Acidic Ocean Experiment from E is For Explore

Jellyfish in a Bottle from Momtastic

Frozen Ocean Animal Rescue from Mama Papa Bubba

Looking for some ocean-themed books? I have two great ones:

Seal Song (book review and activities)

In One Tide Pool (book review and activities)

And finally, a really fun video that you DON’T want to miss:)

I hope you enjoyed this little round-up. Happy summer, friends!

  1. I'm sitting here watching the ocean (Oregon Coast) while reading this. Most of my students haven't even seen the ocean, but I can imagine how much fun it would be to explore it.
