Simple Hands-On Math Patterns

I always start the beginning of Grade 1 with pattern activities.

My goal is always to keep things as simple and effective as I can.

This activity fits the bill perfectly!

Before we begin working with any manipulatives, though, I always give the children 10 to 15 minutes to play with the materials.

This is really important with any grade, but especially with primary students, because as soon as you introduce something new they want to play with it.

DIRECTIONS for PATTERN MAKING:

1. Students work in pairs

2. Give each pair a different set of math counters or manipulatives, e.g., bingo chips, heart counters, lego pieces, buttons, keys, rocks, plastic gems

3. Challenge the students to create patterns

I love all the beautiful designs my kids made!

Everything looks better in rainbow colours.

This pair of students made an AB pattern.

Another AB pattern made by two girls 🙂

Here’s pretty ABC pattern.

ABC pattern. See the holes? There are 3 different types.

Happy patterning!
