Spring is around the corner and it’s time to brighten your classroom walls.
My school is chock full of beautiful art. No matter the time of year, there are always gorgeous images gracing our hallways.
And we don’t even have an art specialist! We just have talented teachers and students.
Under each of the following art projects I’ve listed the grade level and a simple explanation for recreating these masterpieces.
Grades 2/3
Singing in the Rain
- Take a photo of each child posing with a wooden rod as though he or she is holding an umbrella.
- Use a white crayon to draw the horizon line, raindrops and puddles.
- Paint with a variety of blue and gray water colours.
- Use pastels to colour a portion of a rainbow. Cut and glue into place.
- Use pastels to colour an umbrella. Cut and glue into place.
- Carefully cut around the child photo and glue over and beneath the umbrella.
Grades 2/3
Daffodils
- Look at photos or real-life arrangements of daffodils. Notice the shapes and colours of the blossoms and leaves.
- Lightly pencil in 3-5 daffodils, encouraging the students to have a variety of heights.
- Paint the daffodils and leaves with water colour.
- When dry add the blue sky for a beautiful contrast!
Grade 3
Froggies
- Paint a light water colour background using blue, green, yellow or a combination.
- On a separate piece of paper practice a guided drawing of a frog shape (see above).
- Draw a frog body (no limbs) on a piece of card stock. Cut this out and use as a tracer.
- When the painting is dry, light trace several frog body shapes on the painting.
- Using a darker green shade than the background, carefully paint the frog bodies and add the legs and toes.
Grades 2/3
Cherry Blossom Birds
- Choose a piece of construction paper (light blue, yellow, pale green, even orange).
- Carefully rip brown construction paper into the shape of branches. Glue into place.
- Rip tiny pieces of lighter brown paper and glue into place for the nest.
- Dip your finger into pink tempera paint and dab little fingerprints of cherry blossoms all around the branches.
- On a separate piece of white paper use water colours to paint 2 simple bird shapes.
- When dry use a black sharpie to outline the birds, wings, eyes and beaks.
- Carefully cut out the birds and glue into place.
Grades 5/6
Tropical Paradise
- Using a reference photo, lightly pencil in a parrot or toucan shape on a piece of large white paper.
- Use a variety of water colours to paint a rainbow effect on the bird.
- Outline the bird with a black sharpie and add feather and eye details.
- Paint the leaves and vines behind the bird then outline in black sharpie.
- Last step is to carefully paint the background.
Grades 4/5
Mosaic Trees
- Model the drawing of a simple tree silhouette. Be sure to have the branches extending to the end of the paper.
- Colour in the trunk and branches with dark brown or black felt, being sure not to leave any white showing.
- With the same colour felt, draw the mosaic shapes between the branches.
- Colour the mosaic shapes with different coloured felt pens.
- Complete the picture by colouring the area below the lower branches.
- Optional: Use black pastels and water colours.

Did you use art paper or canvases for this project? Did you use regular Elmers glue or jog podge?
Hi Cindy, I’m not sure which art project you’re referring to, but none of the projects were done on canvas. They were all created on paper. For the gluing, I think the white drippy glue was used, which would be Elmer’s. I hope that helps!
