Valentine Poem Freebie & Ideas!

Inside: Two Valentine books, a Valentine poem freebie and some Valentine bag ideas.

Hello! I’m teaming up with Chrissy from First Grade Found Me and her cute Valentine book linky.

Currently I only have two Valentine books … but here they are!

My Two Valentine Books

Tomorrow is February 14th and Hippo is looking for a valentine, but all of the animals she asks-Leopard, Dolphin, Butterfly, Elephant and more-give reasons as to why they aren’t good matches for her. Will Hippo have to celebrate Valentine’s Day alone?     Blurb from Goodreads

This is kind of a weird book and definitely gets mixed reviews.  The first time I read it with my class it was like, “Whaaat? Why is everyone so mean?”

Then at the ending it’s this “Surprise! We were just kidding!” Which I definitely don’t think is okay because we all know people who are mean and then justify it by saying, “I was only kidding.”

But I have to admit it led to a great discussion about how all the reasons for not being Hippo’s Valentine were inappropriate and silly.

So we read the book again and this time the kids thought it was funny because they could see how ludicrous all the reasoning was.

In this Franklin Classic Storybook, it’s Valentine’s Day and Franklin can’t wait to give his friends the cards he has made. But when he gets to school, he discovers that they’re missing. Franklin is heartbroken and worried that now his friends won’t want to give him any cards. Big hearts prevail and Franklin soon learns that he has very good friends — and that he can be a good friend, too.   Blurb from Amazon.

I’m not that crazy about the Franklin books, but my kids love them. And happily, this book is kind and loving with a wonderful message.

Our Valentine Bags

On Thursday I gave the kids white bags and foam stickers from Michaels. I showed them how to fold paper to make a heart then stepped back and watched them do their magic.

They decorated both sides and afterwards I taped on some pretty Valentine ribbon for handles. These will be their bags for collecting cards next week.

These are the bags we made last year.

Valentine Poem

Here’s a copy of our Valentine poem from last week. As far as I know this poem is in the public domain, but if you know otherwise, please let me know.

The heart I used is from a free set of clip art I made.

When you download this poem, you’ll also receive a B&W copy and a copy with no heart (just in case your kiddos like to draw and colour their own pictures).

  1. wow, you are so far ahead of me! We haven't even started on our Valentine boxes. I love giving the kids the supplies and just letting them do what they want, of course there are always a few that don't look very \”Valentiney\” what with orange and black cars. lol Love the poem, I'm going to use it next week. Thanks! Also love the PPBF book, I'll have to see if I can find it.Kelly @ I'm Not Your Grandpa, I'm Your Teacher

  2. You always find the best animal books! My fave is Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch … but it's actually the ONLY Valentines book I own. I feel the same way about Franklin … just don't think they're very strong, but my little Texans love them.Happy friendship week!Barbara
