Title: The Shape of My Heart
Author: Mark Sperring
Illustrator: Alys Paterson
Publishing: Bloomsbury, 2012
Intended Audience: Ages 2-6
Topic: Math, Geometry, Shapes

Opening Lines: This is the shape that we are. The shape of you and me.

Synopsis (copied from the book flap): Shapes are all around us, and children will delight in finding each one. Come on a journey of discovery that ends in the most loving place of all–the shape of our hearts.

Why I Like This Book: This is the perfect book for introducing (or reviewing) 2D shapes with your young child or class. The book is full of bright, happy, simply drawn shapes that are arranged in a collage-like format. There are some repetitive parts to the text, which makes it a good choice for early readers to try on their own.

Resources:

1. Use this book with your class to talk about 2D figures. Project it on your smartboard and have fun finding and naming all the different shapes.

2. Afterwards, challenge the kids to draw their own picture filled with bright and colourful shapes. Or give them some pre-cut shapes to glue onto paper and build their picture around.

3. Make this beautiful art project. Click on the image for directions. It’s from Deep Space Sparkle, of course:)

4. I was inspired to make these sweet little penguins after reading the book. Click on the image to grab your free clip art.
