Yay! Barbara's at my "house" today :)

Hi Everyone! I'm SO happy to welcome Barbara from The Corner to guest post today. She has one of the most heart-warming and spirit-lifting blogs around. I love stopping by each day to read what's on her mind.

The Power of Words by Barbara Gruener

Howdy from The Corner on Character; are you ready for a new title for your collection? Prepare to meet and fall in LOVE with Raj the Bookstore Tiger.

In this beautiful book by author Kathleen T. Pelley, Felicity Fotheringham (don't you AdOrE that name?) transforms a tabby into a Tiger just by saying it was so and believing it. But when a sassy feline named Snowball comes over and hurls hurtful words his way, Raj starts down the path of self-doubt and denial. Could it be that he's really just a regular tabby?

Use this treasure to talk about the power of words with your little tigers. Words can lift us up or tear us down. How do Felicity's words affect Raj? Have students pay close attention to how Raj looks and feels about himself before he meets Snowball and after. How do her words impact him? What happens to boost his confidence and change him back? Have your students write a rhyming verse answering the question:

What do you think happens next between the two tigers?

Then show The Power of Words. Without many words, this character clip speaks for itself. Ask students how they'll use their words make a difference this year.

To thank Barb for making a difference to me every time she stops by the Corner and sprinkles sunshine with her kind words, I'm sending a hardcover copy of Raj to her and to the FIRST reader to comment.

(Leave us an email address and we'll be in touch.)

Thanks again, Barbara!! You're so sweet to be giving away books. Be sure to watch the video -- it's VERY touching. I'm definitely reading "Raj" and showing this clip to my class in September.

Have a fabulous day everyone, and I hope YOU'RE the first commenter :)
