Dragon Books, Dragon Puppet and Free Dragon Colouring Page

Q: What’s the most stressful thing about being a dragon?

A: Blowing out the candles on your birthday cake.

Tee hee hee!  And on that note let’s get started.

I have 5 wonderful dragon books to share, a new paper bag dragon puppet to show off, and a free dragon colouring page for anyone to download.

5 Great Dragon Books You Don’t Want to Miss

I popped over to my favourite library the other day and grabbed these lovely gems. They’re all perfect for 4 to 8-year-olds. (Amazon affiliate links included.)

Ellie’s Dragon by Bob Graham
Candlewick Press, 2020

This is a very special book about a little girl, Ellie, and her imaginary dragon. Ellie’s dragon, Scratch, comes to live with her when she’s just a tiny girl and as Ellie grows up, Scratch grows with her. But eventually Ellie slowly starts to forget about Scratch and he begins fading away. I almost started crying at this point (yup, I’m that kind of person) but luckily the book has a very satisfying and happy ending for all.

I highly recommend this book about friendships and imagination.

Dragons are the Worst! by Alex Willan
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2021

This funny book is narrated by a frustrated goblin. He so badly wants to have a scary reputation like dragons, but as we discover throughout the book, he’s NOT scary at all. He spends all his time explaining why dragons are the worst until the very end when something happens that may, or may not, change this silly goblin’s mind about dragons.

I loved this book. It’s perfect for Kindergarten to Grade 2.

Rosie the Dragon and Charlie Make Waves by Laura H. Kerstein
Two Lions, 2019

This book was silly and a lot of fun. Rosie is Charlie’s pet dragon and best friend. Living with a dragon can be a little challenging, especially when you decide to spend the day with her at the local swimming pool. Rosie gets in to all sorts of mischief (think blue skunk gummy snacks and stinky dragon breath), but Charlie is well-prepared and patiently teaches his friend pool rules and etiquette.

I’m sure your kids will enjoy this goofy summer adventure book!

Do Not Bring Your Dragon to the Last Day of School by Julie Gassman
Capstone Editions, 2020

This is a lively, cute, and colourful read, especially for the last day of school! This rhyming book is full of all the funny and gross things that could go wrong if you were to bring your dragon to school. But I think the best part was the ending. I don’t want to give it away, so all I’ll say is the last page was a sweet surprise.

I don’t think there are many “last day of school” books out there, so this one is perfect to pick up and share with your class!

Don’t Wake the Dragon by Bianca Schulze
Clever Publishing, 2020

This is a really fun interactive book. The reader is instructed to NOT wake the dragon and has to stroke its scales, rock the book, knock on the door and lots more, all in an effort to keep the dragon sleeping. This is the perfect bedtime book but I can also see it working well in the classroom, too, maybe just before a quiet independent reading time.

I liked the fonts used in this book. There were different types, sizes, and weights and they all added to the cheerful feel of the book. The colours were cool, too. Lots of red, teal, lime green and white. I definitely recommend this book for pre-schoolers up to Grade 2 or 3.

Brand New Dragon Puppet

I just finished making this cute new paper bag puppet. It’s only been in my store for a week now.

This little guy (or gal) is perfect to make and play with after reading any one of the dragon books.

It’s great to use while retelling a dragon story and it would be so easy to glue a story response sheet to the back of the puppet so that you combine both a craft and writing activity.

Here’s a picture of the pre-coloured and black/white versions. You’ll get a pdf of both versions if you decide to purchase the paper bag dragon puppet template.

I hope you like it!
