Inside: A free booklet to help kids learn their fact families.
We're currently reviewing fact families. Some of my kids find this a tough one to learn.
But they all love making little fact family booklets to help them understand.
How to Put the Fact Family Booklets Together:
Each booklet represents one fact family. And each little booklet consists of the title page, 2 addition and 2 subtraction pages, for a total of 5 pages.
On the title page, the students print the "whole" on the top corner of the triangle and the "parts" on the bottom corners.
For example they might print 9 at the top of the triangle and 4, 5 on the bottom corners.
Then the students print the answers to their number sentences in the boxes.
So if they had written 5 + 4 then 9 is printed in the box, NOT beside the equal sign.
Then the little snowmen squares are cut out and glued on top of the answer square, for a peek-a-boo effect. So just a little strip of the snowman square is glued so that you can lift up the flap. Does that make sense?
HINT: You definitely want to model this for the kids so that everyone's little flaps actually flap open.
I try to differentiate the activity by letting the kids pick their own family to illustrate.
For some extra practice, turn on some music and have the kids move/dance around the class with their booklets. When the music stops everyone finds a partner and tries to solve each other's peek-a-boo book.
