REMEMBRANCE Day

Hello,

I published this post 7 years ago! I just updated it and thought it was worth sharing again because I have a lovely poem that's perfect for Grade 1, plus a little booklet to print it in.

I also have some book suggestions and links to a several other Remembrance Day posts I've done over the years. Be sure to click through because there are lots of freebies, too.

A few days before Remembrance Day (November 11th in Canada) I like to teach my children the following poem.

Remembrance Day in Grade 1. We have this great little booklet we put together. The kids learn a bit about the significance of the poppy AND they practice their printing! #remembranceday #gradeonederful #poppies #firstgrade

After they've learned the poem they print it out on poppy-shaped paper. Each page contains one verse (3 pages in all). Underneath each row of words is a line so that they can copy the words. When the printing is finished the pages are coloured (usually with lots of little red poppies) and stapled together for a little booklet.

They look great when they're finished and the kids really enjoy making the books.

Here's what one of the booklet pages looks like:

This year I'm also going to have them do the following water colour. This gorgeous art can be found at "That Artist Woman's" blog.

  1. We're just about to start our Remembrance Day activities, too. Each year we recite "In Flanders Fields", and "A Response to In Flanders Fields" at our assembly. I also read them "A Poppy Is To Remember". On Monday we're going to start our Legion poster contest ... their art always amazes me.
