Paint a Poem Book Review

Hi Friends,

I was going through some of my teacher books today and came across this treasure by Moira Andrew called Paint a Poem.

Some teachers tend to shy away from having their young students write poems, but it's not all that hard, especially if you loosely follow a writing frame and do lots of up-front idea loading.

And when you pair the poem with some fun art, it's going to be a hit!

Title: Paint a Poem
Author: Moira Andrew
Publishing: Belair Publications, 1996

Description:

As the sub-title on the cover says, the book contains "imaginative ideas for the writing and presentation of poetry with children from five to eleven years".

The text is 69 pages in length and contains 55 different ideas for writing and presenting poems.

All the ways of presenting are colourful, artsy and often unique. Ms. Andrew shares ideas for poetry mobiles, sculptures, booklets, borders, pop-ups, postcards and more.

She shares ideas, warm-ups and poetry frames, too. A couple of examples are one-word poems, weather shapes, mini posters, day and night and turn-abouts.

Here's a peek at one of the pages:

I LOVE this book because it's easy to use and is very inspirational. Although most of her examples tend to be completed by 9 to 11 year-olds, it's easy enough to figure out how to adapt them for younger children.

When I was teaching poetry I never liked to just leave the poems in draft form in their notebooks or writing folders, because honestly, they didn't look like much and often didn't resemble poetry.

But when you take that same poem and put some thought and care into the presentation -- WOW! The difference is amazing and so worth the extra time.

One of her ideas is called a Weather Wheel.  She suggests having the children draw their own illustrations around the wheel (which I think is a great idea), but in case you're short on time, I've included a template for a Christmas/Winter wheel.  The poem is read clock-wise.

It's three-page freebie and includes a gray and white copy, a colour version, and an example poem.
