Easy Ideas for Remembrance Day in First Grade

Last week my first graders made torn paper poppy art!

I’m not gonna lie. It was time-consuming. It took us 1 1/2 hours to complete.

BUT! They loved it and it was pretty easy for most of the kids.

Although thinking back on it perhaps it was the chance to use the white liquid glue they enjoyed the most. Haha!

If you’d like to try this activity here are a couple of tips for you:

  1. Give everyone two paper plates to save their ripped paper in (one for each colour).
  2. Don’t let anyone near the glue until they’ve ripped up all their paper.
  3. You don’t need huge deep puddles of glue (shallow is just fine).
  4. It’s okay to place a pinch of several paper pieces in the glue at once. That kind of speeds along the process a bit.

Before I do any kind of Remembrance Day activity I always preface it with a discussion about the meaning and/or read a book.

Here are my favourites. Just click on an image to see it on Amazon.

I have the beautiful poppy poem shown below (bottom right of graphic) in a booklet form.

The booklet is shaped like a poppy and the kids copy each line in their best printing. These always look really pretty displayed in the classroom, too.

The painted field of poppies can be found here.

I also have directions for the very pretty and popular Peace Plates that we often make. The plates are a really nice follow up to What Does Peace Feel Like? and The Peace Book.
