Have You Seen Them Yet?

Meet the Issy Books!

I just received a set of Issy Books and I LOVE them!

But more importantly the kids in my Grade 1 class love them!

These are just the sweetest little readers I've seen in a long time. They're written by Grandma and reading specialist, Pat Calfee, and her 5-year-old granddaughter, Isybilla.

These very charming, colourful books use lots of sight words and a controlled vocabulary. They're full of engaging characters such as Oscar the Octopus, Snappy the Crab and Harry the Hippo.

I introduced some of my "younger" readers to the books last week and the kids were immediately attracted to the child-like drawings. They were surprised to learn that someone their age had drawn all the pictures!

I think the books are at about a D or E level (Fountas and Pinnell).  There are lots of repetitive words, but the text itself isn't patterned, which makes it perfect for those little ones who really need to start focussing on the letters in the words and on the contextual meaning.

I honestly can't say enough about these little books and I'm hoping that my principal can find some extra money so I can buy a set of five.

If you click HERE you'll be taken to the Issy Books home page where you can find their facebook and pinterest pages. They also have a free copy of Snappy the Crab to download.

You can also find the book sets on Amazon.
