Rosie the Hen Meets Pete the Cat

If you’ve been teaching as long as I have then you’re probably familiar with this great book by Pat Hutchins: Rosie’s Walk.

Rosie goes for a walk, never noticing the fox following her. The text is very simple yet engaging. The illustrations are quite comical — the fox always makes you laugh.

What’s really cool about this book though, is the ease with which you can adapt it to any writing of your choice.  That’s where Pete the Cat comes in. I think it would be great fun (after spending some time with Rosie), to have the kids write their own version starring Pete!

I would have the kids paint or colour a picture of Pete going for a walk through the neighbourhood before writing their story. It might be fun to have them draw a dog or raccoon or some other creature who might represent some kind of threat to Pete.

I made this retelling sheet earlier in the year (and posted it in May). Here it is again.

I also came across this cute little dot-to-dot of Pete from Making Learning Fun.

  1. Thanks so much for joining the Pete Party. Retelling Pete with a Rosie flair is a brilliant idea. (One of your many!) We could do this in kindergarten as a class activity or in groups with a big buddy helper/scribe. Cant' wait to try it. I am pinning your story sheet.sandi
