My copy of Conscious Discipline by Dr. Becky A. Bailey just arrived.
I’ve only just started the book, but I’m totally blown away. This woman SPEAKS to me!
I first heard about the book from Heather, at Heather’s Heart, who regularly writes about conscious discipline.
Like most teachers, I have my share of troubled children and behavioural challenges. For the most part I’m happy with how I handle things. But not always.
It’s so easy to let myself fall into the trap of thinking, “Well, I’ve tried everything! It must be their fault” That’s just not healthy or helpful thinking and I know that. But it’s hard to move out of it.
That’s why I was so attracted to this book, because it offers a whole new way of viewing those less than happy times in the classroom.
One of the first things I read about were the seven powers, to remind me, that developing my own self-control, is the first step towards change — change in me — which will eventually filter down to the children.
As a reminder to myself, I made this poster that I’m going to hang near my desk.
You’re welcome to grab it, if you like. Just right click to save and then paste into word or powerpoint and then print.
Thanks, Heather, for sharing all your amazing thoughts and ideas, and for turning me on to this book!
